Annual review · Year ended 31 March 2020

Stronger communities through shared enterprise

Seed Banks and grain storage formed the core of Circuit’s work with farming communities in north-eastern Myanmar. The year’s report described community lending as a way to reduce reliance on costly loans and give families more secure livelihood options.

01

New Hope Seed Banks

Communities took out low-interest loans together, sharing responsibility for repayment. Interest accumulated towards the goal of communities eventually running their own seed banks. Circuit reported stronger community unity and observed improvements in infrastructure, school attendance, health and living standards.

02

Grain storage

Love Conquers All Foundation bought grain directly from farmers and stored it for later sale, taking on the market risk. The report described the potential for trading income to help fund charitable work, but provided no quantified outcome results for this programme.

03

What Circuit learned

The team identified two priorities: favour plant-based projects where they carried less climate and disease risk, and favour community-owned projects where local accountability could support long-term sustainability.
