WHY FAMILIES MATTER TO US
Behind every livelihood
is a family.
In his book Broadside, Circuit patron Rob Harley recounts a family Stu met in Shan State. Their daughter, Nam Wan, was fourteen. Her father was seriously unwell. Debt had cost the family their farmland and livelihood, and their home was at risk too.
With so few options left, Nam Wan faced sexual exploitation as a way to support her family. Meeting them helped shape Stu’s determination to work alongside families facing debt and poverty, and was part of the story behind Circuit’s beginnings.
That history helps explain why livelihoods matter so much to us. A family needs more than the next meal. It needs ways to earn, make decisions and look towards a future with greater security.
